For this purpose she travelled with hundreds other travelers to Jerusalem to the pilgrimage of the Holy Cross. When she tried to enter the temple to worship, she felt an unknown power preventing her to do so. She then stood before the icon of the Virgin Mary and asked Her for guidance. With Her support she advanced through the temple and genuflected. Listening to Her words she went to the desert where she spent forty seven years without encountering any human being. Sunburned, naked, victim of the heat and frost, she lived with prayers and penitence. At that same period, the monk Abba Zossimas, listening to God’s will, went to the monastery of Saint John the Baptist. According to the monastery rules, the monks should strive in the desert alone, during the Lent and come back on Palm Sunday to celebrate the Holy Week. There in the desert he encountered the weird figure of Saint Maria who asked him to return a year later to commune her. On Holy Thursday when all monks had returned to the monastery, Abba Zossimas stayed to commune Saint Maria; she then went away walking on the water of the river Jordan. Next year the Abba returned to commune her again but found her dead looking to the East. The life and strong will of Saint Maria’s faith led her to penitence and transcending. After his father’s death, Constantine the Great was proclaimed Augustus in the West, when at the same time Galerios was Augustus in the East. Galerios and later Maxentius, son of Maximilian, did not accept the status of Constantine the Great, so having become weakened invoked God’s power without really knowing to which God to address. As he was praying he visualized up in the sky the Cross with the inscription \"in hoc signo vinces,\"en touto nika\", \"in this you win\" and that same night he had a vision of the symbol of the Cross inducing him to produce imitations as amulets and go to war. With the power of God he marched in Rome without any impediment. He immediately turned his attention towards the Christians, wherever they may be, and in 313 A.D. he succeeded the historical decree of religious tolerance. For years he defended the Trinity of God and the unity of the church with successive Synods. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e During the last period of his life, being seriously ill, Constantine the Great went to Elenopolis of Bithynia, his mother’s birthplace, where feeling repentant, he decided to be baptized Christian. For this reason he went to Nicomedia where he assembled all the Bishops and was baptized. Following his baptism he never wore again the imperial tunic but only the white gown of his baptism. He fought against the Turks and was arrested by the Tatars who sold him to an Ottoman officer in Caesarea of Cappadocia. Saint John did not abandon his faith like others. His faith to God softened his master’s soul who, together with his wife, as time went by, loved him and provided him lodging near the barn. However he preferred to live in the stable together with the animals, to exhaust his body physically, to pray and to overtake the stench of the animals, sustained by the spirituality and the scent he emitted. When his master went to Mecca, his wife invited relatives and friends to eat and wished her husband would be there with them to enjoy the food she had prepared. Saint John then, empowered with faith and prayers \"transferred\" a platter with his wife’ rice to his master, who revealed it, upon his return at home. This miracle made him well known to the world, he however continued to live as a hermit, fasting and praying. He passed away peacefully in the barn with the animals, in 1730 A.D. After his death, his holy relics was transferred intact and fragrant to the church of Saint George and later to the temple of Saint Basil and finally to the temple that was built in his honor. Many miracles are related to him after his death. The Emperor Michael III and Patriarch Fotios asked from Cyril, whose real name was Constantine, and his brother Methodius, following the request of the Prince of Moravia, Rostislav, to become missionaries. They translated the Bible in the ancient Slavonic language and later in the Glagolitic alphabet (the oldest known Slavic alphabet) which was based on Greek letters, and is used till today, in its final form, as the alphabet of the contemporary Russian and of many Slavic languages. Their after death influence reached Croatia, Bohemia and Poland.
