The Holy and Great Monastery of Vatopedi is the largest monastery complex of Mount Athos, which began to be constructed in the 10th century. The portable icons and the frescos which adorn all parts of the nave are classified under the Hysterokomninian period and under the first period of Paleologi. The frescos at the external narthex of the Paleologi period reflect scenes mainly from the life of Christ and are complemented by full body forms of prophets, saints and angels. A feature of the Monastery’s Nave is the Sparagma (rescued part) of a fresco dated around 1260 A.D. depicting Virgin Mary Glikofiloussa as central figure and the Archangels Michael and Gabriel on the right and left side.
