MODERN ICON PAINTING THROUGH THE WORKS OF G. KORDIS AT THE BYZANTINE MUSEUM OF ATHENS

Modern icon painting, the approach, and depiction of the holiest standards of Orthodoxy, is proof of continuity of the high art of icon painting. The Byzantine and Christian Museum, consistent in its role as one of the most important museums worldwide that promotes the art and the culture of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine times, hosts a permanent collection of 25,000 exhibits from the 3rd until the 20th century and a temporary exhibition in which it tries to present everything that is happening today in the fields of its interest.

The new exhibition titled "Writing on the light. Portable Icons 2005 - 2019” presents works of George Kordis, the icon painter from Fthiotida, Greece, who, after his studies in Theology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Boston, he studied painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. He returned to Athens and continued his studies in engraving with the great engraver and teacher Fotis Mastichiadis. Kordis’s career is divided between teaching -from 2003 he teaches icon painting at the University of Athens, School of Theology, and is a visiting professor at the Yale University, Institute of Sacred Music and the University of Notre Dame, Department of Theology, in the US -and icon painting.

The exhibition which opens on September 16 and runs until November 15, depicts on various traditional materials but also on tablet the forms of Saints, events of the Divine Providence, and persons of the Byzantium, using egg tempera, ink, and digital media.
